Why he matters

Sir Robert Bryson Hall II was born in Rockville, Maryland, in 1990 and grew up largely in the West Deer Park neighborhood of Gaithersburg. At 13 he met Solomon Taylor, who became his mentor. RZA’s score for Kill Bill sent him to Wu-Tang, and he bought the Roots’ Do You Want More?!!!??! that same year. Taylor brought him stacks of CDs full of instrumentals to write over.

He released a first mixtape in 2009 under the name Psychological, then shortened it to Logic. Young, Broke & Infamous in 2010 got him signed to Visionary Music Group, and the Young Sinatra series followed. Young Sinatra: Welcome to Forever, a free download in May 2013, came out weeks after he signed with Def Jam, with No I.D. attached as executive producer of his debut.

Under Pressure came out in October 2014, recorded in a two-week span, produced mostly by No I.D., and debuted at No. 4. The Incredible True Story followed in 2015, a science-fiction concept album that debuted at No. 3. Everybody, YSIV and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind all debuted at No. 1. He has since gone independent with College Park and Ultra 85. Critics have not always been kind to the later records. The early tapes are where the technique is easiest to study.

What a working rapper can take from it

Write over borrowed beats until you can make your own. Logic’s apprenticeship was a pile of instrumental CDs and a mentor who kept handing him more. By The Incredible True Story he had production credits on his own album. Writing over other people’s instrumentals is training, not a shortcut. The first-setup guide covers what you need to start making the beats yourself.

Carry the debut alone. The standard edition of Under Pressure has no guest appearances. That’s a statement: the listener hears only you for an entire album. If your project needs five features to hold attention, the writing isn’t done yet. Go back to the verse-writing guide.

Build the persona out of your real influences. Logic called himself Young Sinatra, named his fans the RattPack, and leaned into Frank Sinatra openly. It reads as genuine because it was. A persona drawn from what you actually love holds up better than one borrowed from whoever is charting this month.

The lesson

Write over other people's beats until you can make your own, and prove you can carry a record alone before you call in features.
