DC, Maryland & Virginia
rappers.
Go-go pocket in DC, suburban workhorses in Maryland, and a Tidewater production line in Virginia that reshaped pop radio.
The DMV's local music is go-go, and its rappers grew up with that live, percussion-heavy pocket in their ears. Wale built a national career partly by bringing that pocket to the front of his records.
Virginia's Tidewater area ran on a different engine: Missy Elliott, Timbaland and the Neptunes' circle reshaped pop and rap radio, and Clipse made Virginia Beach a standard for cold, precise street rap. Maryland's Logic built one of the biggest independent-minded fan bases of the 2010s.
