    Madvillainy album

With Madlib as Madvillain. Twenty-two songs, most under three minutes, almost no hooks. Play it straight through.

  2. 1999

    Operation: Doomsday album

The first record as MF DOOM, self-produced and lo-fi. Hear the persona being built from scratch.

    Mm..Food album

A concept album about food, mostly self-produced. The easiest way into how his double meanings work.

Why he matters

Daniel Dumile was born in London and raised in Long Beach, Long Island. His first run was as Zev Love X in KMD, the group he formed with his brother DJ Subroc; they debuted on 3rd Bass’s “The Gas Face” and released Mr. Hood on Elektra in 1991. Elektra dropped KMD before the second album came out, and he stepped away from rap for years.

He came back in the late ’90s rapping at open mics at the Nuyorican Poets Café with his face covered, then built a character around a mask modeled on Marvel’s Doctor Doom. Bobbito Garcia’s Fondle ’Em label put out Operation: Doomsday in 1999. He produced it himself, mostly over three weeks on borrowed MPCs at DJ Stretch Armstrong’s apartment, mixing ’80s soul and smooth-jazz loops with vintage drum breaks and clips from the old Fantastic Four cartoon.

The early 2000s were a flood of aliases: King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn, Metal Fingers for the Special Herbs instrumentals. Madvillainy, made with Madlib for Stones Throw in 2004, is the one most people call his masterpiece. Mm..Food came the same year, and The Mouse and the Mask with Danger Mouse in 2005. He also produced tracks for Ghostface Killah’s Fishscale. He died in 2020; Super What?, his second album with Czarface, came out posthumously.

What a working rapper can take from it

Write for a character, not just yourself. DOOM rapped in the third person, gave the villain a backstory, and spread side projects across other names. That freed him to be absurd, bitter or funny without breaking the frame. If you’re stuck, write sixteen bars as somebody with a different name and history and see what you’ll say through them that you wouldn’t say as you. The verse-writing guide covers the line between dense and cluttered, which is the line DOOM walked.

Cut the hook if the verse is the hook. Most of Madvillainy’s twenty-two tracks run under three minutes with no chorus. That only works if every bar earns its spot, but it’s a real option, especially for a project built to be heard front to back.

Cheap gear, borrowed gear, done. Operation: Doomsday came off borrowed MPCs in someone else’s apartment, and Madlib made most of the Madvillainy beats in a hotel room with a Boss SP-303, a turntable and a tape deck. Limits force decisions. The sample-chopping guide works from the same mindset.

The lesson

A persona is a writing tool. The mask gave DOOM a character to write for, a backstory to reference and a reason to never explain himself.
