Why they matter

Edward Anderson was born in Roxbury and started rapping at fifteen as Ed Rock, in a crew called F.T.I. (Fresh to Impress). They landed a song, “Suzi Q,” on the 1986 compilation Boston Goes Def!. In late 1989 he formed Ed O.G & Da Bulldogs with New York’s Awesome 2, Teddy Ted and Special K, who also produced.

Life of a Kid in the Ghetto came out on PWL America/Mercury in March 1991. “I Got to Have It” went to No. 1 on the Hot Rap Songs chart and was later sampled by Mary J. Blige on “Ooh!” “Be a Father to Your Child” got airplay on Boston radio and reached No. 5 on the same chart. That run made him the first rapper from Boston to really register in New York and across the country.

Roxbury 02119 followed in 1993, with Diamond D added to the production. After that the group ran its course, and Anderson kept going as Edo G, a name that started as a label misspelling and stuck. There were solo albums starting with The Truth Hurts, a full album with Pete Rock in 2004, the Boston trio Special Teamz with Jaysaun and Slaine, and a duo record with Masta Ace in 2009. He also cut “Rollin’ Dolo” with fellow Roxbury native Guru of Gang Starr.

What a working rapper can take from it

Say the plain thing. “Be a Father to Your Child” is a message record with no gimmick, and Boston radio played it anyway. A direct subject, stated clearly, can be the hook. If you’ve been circling an idea with metaphors, try writing the verse as if you’re talking to one person across a table. The verse-writing guide has drills for it.

Name your place. Roxbury 02119 puts a neighborhood and a ZIP code on the cover. When you come from a city the industry ignores, specifics are how listeners outside it find you, and how people at home know you didn’t trade them in for New York.

A long career runs on collaboration. Edo G’s later catalog is mostly partnerships: Pete Rock, Masta Ace, Special Teamz, and a long list of guest verses for independent artists around the world. One-producer albums and steady features keep a veteran working between solo records. Get each one out cleanly; the single-release guide covers the distribution side.

The lesson

Say the plain thing. "Be a Father to Your Child" got Boston radio play on a direct, unglamorous message, and it still sounds like him.
