Why he matters
Born Artist Julius Dubose in 1995 (Artist is his legal first name), he was raised in Highbridge in the Bronx. He started rapping at twelve after listening to Kanye West and 50 Cent, and at DeWitt Clinton High he joined lunchtime cyphers, performing rhymes he’d already written and kept in a big notebook. He finished high school in Fort Pierce, Florida, where he met the producer Myster Whyte, who made his first single, “Temporary,” and put him in his first real studio.
Back in New York in 2015, he, Don Q, Quincy “QP” Acheampong and Bubba started Highbridge the Label and set up a home studio. The mixtape Artist came out in February 2016, followed that year by three opening dates on Drake and Future’s Summer Sixteen Tour, a deal with Atlantic in July, and the TBA EP in October. He made XXL’s Freshman Class in 2017, and The Bigger Artist debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 that fall.
Hoodie SZN (2018) reached number one in its third week, and its cover put him in a Highbridge the Label hoodie with the actual High Bridge behind him. It also became, by pure album sales, the lowest-selling number one since SoundScan tracking began, which tells you exactly how the chart had changed. He was moving units by streams, not by selling discs.
What a working rapper can take from it
Start with what you have. A notebook full of lunchtime-cypher verses got him to a producer who could take him further. You don’t need a booth to start; you need reps. The first-setup guide covers what to buy first without going broke.
Melody is a writing decision. Critics singled out The Bigger Artist for turning vulnerable moments into sing-alongs. That only works if the cadence carries a tune. Hum your verse back without the words. If there’s no shape to it, rework the cadence before you rework the bars.
Plan for streams. Hoodie SZN topped the chart on listening, not discs. Consistent releases and a catalog people replay matter more than a big first week. The streaming release guide walks through the rollout.
Build the label before a label calls. Highbridge the Label came first, so Atlantic signed a working operation with a home studio, not just a voice.
